Abstract

“Workforce housing” is defined as a multifamily housing development or a development with a mixture of housing types in a defined community restricted to employees of a community service-oriented entity or institution like education, health care, or local retail. These housing opportunities typically target those earning below 60 to 120% of the area’s median income.

My research aims to find housing systems around the United States to help with the planning process of a workforce housing village, specifically for those with critical jobs like teaching, for a county in Delaware.

During these initial stages, I found eleven examples of affordable housing around the U.S. for those working in education, health care, local business owners, or those experiencing homelessness.

I then narrowed my list to the six most intriguing and impressive developments. Using this new list, I created a pamphlet detailing these housing villages’ financing, construction, and amenities. In the future, these findings will help guide municipalities or those looking to implement an affordable housing village in their community.
