Abstract

This project dives into the rich visual language of the Baroque era, reimagining its dramatic techniques to depict contemporary scenes. By using the Baroque emphasis on grandeur, contrast, and dynamic composition, the project aims to bridge the historical with the modern, offering a fresh perspective on today’s realities. My research for the project involved the study of Baroque characteristics such as chiaroscuro, intense emotionality, and intricate detailing, which I then applied to scenes from modern life that reflect current social and cultural themes.

Through my series of paintings, the project juxtaposes the opulence and intensity of Baroque aesthetics with the familiar and culturally significant, often mundane elements of contemporary existence. This approach not only highlights the timeless nature of Baroque techniques but also invites viewers to reconsider the relevance and impact of historical styles in today’s context.

The pieces I have created for the project is a collection that challenges traditional interpretations of both Baroque art and modern scenes, fostering a dialogue between past and present. I hope this project demonstrates how historical techniques can breathe new life into contemporary issues, and at the same time, offer a nuanced reflection on the evolution of artistic expression.
