Abstract
In the field of Computer Science (CS), community support plays a crucial yet underexplored role in influencing students’ academic success. This research project investigates the correlation between community engagement and academic achievement within CS education. Through a survey and systematic literature review, this study aims to understand how students’ involvement in community-oriented activities—such as research, clubs, study groups, tutoring, and support networks—affects their academic performance. The objectives include quantifying the extent of student participation in community-building activities within the CS major (initially at the University of Delaware), assessing their academic achievements in relation to their community engagement, identifying diverse forms of community support available to CS students, and discussing students’ perceptions and experiences regarding the influence of community support on their academic journey. We will also reach out to university-registered student organizations (RSOs) to encourage involvement as well as faculty to suggest a more well-rounded curriculum that focuses on both academic and extracurricular activities while exploring changes in teaching styles to promote collaboration and social engagement. The significance of this research lies in its potential to inform educators and academic institutions about the importance of fostering inclusive and supportive environments, and guiding the creation of policies and initiatives that enhance the educational experience for CS students.
