Abstract

A “Study of Saris” is a documentary project that aims to delve into the sari’s rich cultural significance and historical evolution within contemporary society. This project comprises a series of in-depth interviews with Indian women from various generations, spanning from the Silent Generation to Generation Z. By engaging in candid conversations with these diverse women in a controlled setting of all being born and raised in India; the documentary seeks to explore and understand the changing views, feelings, and evolution of sarees as a defining cultural garment for Indian women.

The saree, with its origins tracing back thousands of years, holds immense significance as a symbol of tradition, identity, and grace in Indian culture. As the world evolves rapidly, traditional customs and clothing have inevitably been influenced by globalization, technology, and shifting societal norms. This project captures the nuances of this transformation by preserving the narratives of women who have experienced the profound impact of these changes over the years and what it means for the future of this symbolic cultural garment.

To begin this project, much research was done to better understand sarees and their history. As the project involved interviewing people, an IRB application was submitted to be reviewed by the board to ensure the subject matter, project methodology, and interview questions were all appropriate. During the trip to India, we visited Mumbai, Jaipur, and Udaipur, in which 8 subjects were interviewed, and various footage of local artisans and workers were taken. A trailer has been made to provide a snapshot of the full documentary. More interviews will be conducted to gain a deeper insight into Generation Z’s perspective.

This project aspires to be more than just a documentary; it aims to be a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Indian women and the saree, reflecting on how this iconic garment has woven itself into the ever-changing fabric of Indian identity. Through the documentary’s poignant portrayal, viewers will be drawn into a compelling journey of culture, history, and women’s empowerment, celebrating the beauty of diversity and the threads that unite generations.
